Hello World-Greetings in 42 Languages around the world

Greetings in 42 Languages Around the World
by Manja Stojic
Cartwheel Books, 2002

This books is a great way to introduce differences in culture and race to children.  The illustrations are beautifully painted and there is an index in the back as well.  With a variety of languages from around the world, a discussion can start about where the child's family originates and languages they speak.  Using phonetics, all English speaking parents can say all the greetings and also help the child as well.

Activities can include:
-Charting all the different countries
-Labeling a map with the different locations
-Have children paint themselves and then have them (or you) write their native greeting
With older kids:
-discuss how many greetings sound the same and where they are located.
- Find the missing languages.  Look at the countries/languages that are not represented.
