El Barrio
El Barrio
Written by Debbi Chocolate
Illustrated by David Diaz
Henry Holt & Co. 2009
A young Latino boy shares his culture on the day of his sister's Quinceanera. As he travels around his city, he shares what the "barrio" is in different parts in the country including Chicago, New York and Texas and includes both Spanish Caribbean and Mexican traditions.
Activities:
Language Arts-Since the book includes a glossary, it can build on learning some Spanish. The book also has quite a bit of dense vocabulary for Kindergartners and 1st graders to read on their own.
Social Science-The cultural Latino aspects are varied in the book. From the different cities and styles of music to the religious beliefs, this can be a nice introduction to differences within a larger cultural group. Older children can look up different music styles, cities and traditions associated with the culture.
