Owl Moon

Owl Moon
Written by Jane Yolen
Illustrated by John Schoenherr
Philomel Books, 1987

In honor of Father's day, I had to share this story about a father who takes his child "owling" on a winter night. Although the author has now shared that it is about a father and daughter, it is never revealed in the story and can be used for all father/child relationships. Besides the beautiful illustrations and poetic words, this book shows us the bonding between a father and his child. Most classrooms now use this book as an introduction to units of nocturnal animals specifically owls.

Activities:
Science-Nocturnal animals and seasons. Owl pellets can be dissected, wing span can be discussed and much more.
Language Arts-Vocabulary is vast with words like shrugged, stained, crunched and disappointed. Personal stories and family trees can be created.
