William's Doll

William's Doll
By Charlotte Zolotow
HarperCollins 1972

This wonderful book about a little boy who wants a doll to practice on how to be a father is a story that is still true today. It shows how some men tend to worry if a little boy wants to play with dolls for fear of what that might mean when it means that are in a loving home and wants to learn to provide that same love to another. Grandma comes through in the end by buying William a doll and tells the father that his son is trying to be like his father.

Discussion Question: Have the children decide the one thing that they want and ask them what it would feel like if they were told they cannot have it. How would it make them feel? Has that ever happened before?
